We are committed to protecting your personal information and being transparent about how we use it.
Information We Collect
When you create an account we collect your email address, chosen username, and (optionally) a profile picture and bio. While you use the app we collect: your learning progress, exercise answers, audio recordings of pronunciation attempts (processed on-device for speech recognition; not retained on our servers), streak and gamification data, device type and OS version, language preference, and crash diagnostics. We never collect contacts, location, or payment card details.
How We Use Your Data
We use your data to: (a) authenticate you and sync progress across devices, (b) personalise lessons based on what you have already completed, (c) deliver streak-saving notifications you have opted into, (d) detect bugs and crashes through aggregated diagnostic reports, (e) verify your premium subscription status with Apple and Google, and (f) respond to your support requests. We do not use your data to train AI models, and we do not sell or rent it.
Third-Party Services
To run the app we share specific data with: Google Firebase (Authentication, Cloud Messaging for notifications, Crashlytics for crash reports, Analytics for aggregate usage); Apple Sign in with Apple (when you choose that login method); Google Sign-In; RevenueCat (subscription receipt validation — receives a hashed user identifier and your active entitlement, never your email content). All transfers happen over TLS 1.2+. Each provider has its own privacy policy that also governs the data they receive.
Audio & Speech Recognition
When you practise pronunciation the app records short audio clips and runs speech recognition on-device using Apple Speech Framework or Google Speech Services depending on your platform. The recognised text is compared to the target word locally; the audio itself is discarded immediately and never uploaded to our servers.
Data Retention
We keep your account data for as long as your account exists. Crash diagnostics are auto-deleted by Firebase after 90 days. Audio clips are never persisted beyond the recording itself. If you delete your account (see "Your Rights" below) we erase your profile, progress, and uploaded avatar within 30 days; anonymised aggregate data may be retained for analytics.
Cookies & Tracking
The mobile app does not use cookies. The web admin uses only a session cookie required to keep you logged in — there is no advertising or cross-site tracking. We do not participate in third-party advertising networks. The IDFA (Apple) and Advertising ID (Google) are not requested by the app.
Children's Privacy
Darija Lingo is not directed at children under 13 (or 16 in the EU). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us their information without parental consent, please email darijalingo@gmail.com and we will delete the account immediately.
Your Rights (GDPR / CCPA)
Depending on your jurisdiction you may have the right to: access a copy of your data, correct inaccuracies, delete your account, restrict or object to processing, port your data to another service, and withdraw consent at any time. To exercise any of these rights, email darijalingo@gmail.com from the address tied to your account; we respond within 30 days. EU/EEA residents may also lodge a complaint with their local supervisory authority.
How to Delete Your Account
In the app: open Profile → Settings → Account → Delete account. The deletion request is processed within 30 days; you will receive an email confirmation when complete. Alternatively email darijalingo@gmail.com with the subject "Delete account" from your registered email and we will process it manually within 30 days.
International Data Transfers
Our backend is hosted in the EU; Firebase services may process data in the United States and other regions where Google operates. When data is transferred outside your country we rely on Standard Contractual Clauses approved by the European Commission and equivalent safeguards under UK GDPR.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy when laws change or we add new features that affect data handling. Material changes will be announced in the app at least 14 days before they take effect; the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page always reflects the latest revision.
